Flight of the Gibbon killed my son Spencer Donaldson
On April 13,2019 my daughter and son-in-law Spencer Donaldson chose a zip line zipline tour without Flight of the Gibbon, advertised as the safest zipline operator in a Thailand ad. The only one in compliance with American safety standards (a member of the ACCT based in Boulder Colorado). They advertise on their website as being compliant with ACCT standards. Spencer fell to his death, on the “superman” leg of the course when the cable that held him to the main cable failed. The clamps holding the short cable together were installed backwards. The cable was pulled though the clamps when his weight (122kg) was applied to the cable. The cable has a breaking strength of more than 8000kg. There was no backup safety cable at this locations (a requirement) and he subsequently fell 15m to the rocky jungle floor. His girlfriend witness the whole thing live and on camera. The they made her ride the rest of the course after saving he was “safe” when he was in fact dead. They took more than 4 1/2 hours to get in off the course. Where he was pronounced dead. Flight of the Gibbon has denied responsibility in court. They did however pay for the cremation and the shuttle bus to and from the hotel and police stations all week. Thanks to Flight of the Gibbon management and South African farang, Gary Humphreys and especially Gary Searle for paying for the funeral. Yup, Flight of the Gibbon, the safest zipline zip line in Chiang Mai Thailand. Your time will come
